Health and Safety Policy for West Hampstead Carpet Cleaners

West Hampstead Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing professional, reliable and safe carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to protecting clients, our team members, visitors and the wider community during the delivery of our cleaning services in residential and commercial environments.

1. Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities. We seek to continually improve our health and safety performance and to integrate safe working practices into every aspect of our operations.

To achieve this, we will identify hazards, assess risks and implement appropriate control measures. We expect every member of our team to take responsibility for working safely and to cooperate with this policy at all times.

2. Responsibilities

Management is responsible for maintaining this policy, ensuring that risk assessments are carried out and reviewed, providing appropriate training and supervision, and supplying suitable equipment and cleaning products. Management will also investigate any accidents, incidents or near misses and take corrective action where required.

Employees and operatives are required to follow safe systems of work, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and immediately report hazards, defects, incidents or concerns to management. Each operative has a duty of care to themselves, colleagues, clients and anyone who may be affected by their work.

3. Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before starting work at any property, our operatives are instructed to consider the environment and identify potential hazards such as slips, trips, electrical risks, poor ventilation, confined spaces, access routes, pets and children present, or any fragile or high-value items. Where necessary, additional control measures will be implemented, such as restricting access to certain areas, moving obstacles, improving lighting or increasing ventilation.

We develop and maintain safe systems of work for our core activities, including carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, rug cleaning and stain removal. These systems cover equipment setup, correct use of chemicals, electrical safety, manual handling, working in client premises and the safe completion and clear-down of each job.

4. Use of Chemicals and Cleaning Products

West Hampstead Carpet Cleaners selects cleaning products that are appropriate for professional use and suitable for the type of surface being treated. All chemicals are stored, transported, diluted and applied in line with manufacturer instructions and current safety data sheets.

Our operatives are trained in the safe handling of cleaning solutions, including avoiding direct contact with skin and eyes, preventing inhalation of mists or vapours where relevant, and ensuring that containers are labelled and kept secure when not in use. We take particular care in homes with children, pets, elderly residents or people with known allergies or sensitivities, and we can adapt our approach where specific concerns are identified in advance.

5. Equipment Safety and Electrical Controls

We use professional carpet cleaning machinery and accessories appropriate for domestic and commercial properties. All equipment is maintained in safe working order and is inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment is removed from service until repaired or replaced.

When using electrically powered equipment, operatives will inspect cables and plugs before use, avoid overloading sockets, keep cables away from water and walkways as far as practicable, and switch off and unplug equipment when not in use. Extension leads are used safely and only when necessary, with trip risks minimised by careful cable placement.

6. Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment is provided where identified by risk assessment. This may include gloves, protective footwear, eye protection, face masks or coveralls depending on the nature of the task, the products being used and the environment in which we are working.

All operatives are expected to use personal protective equipment correctly, keep it in good condition and report any loss or damage. PPE is not a substitute for eliminating hazards at source but is used as an additional control measure where risks cannot be fully removed.

7. Manual Handling and Physical Safety

Our work often involves moving hoses, machines and accessories in and out of properties and between rooms. We train team members in safe lifting and carrying techniques, the use of handling aids where available and the importance of asking for help when moving heavier items.

Operatives will avoid unnecessary lifting, use suitable routes and take reasonable steps to remove or reduce manual handling risks, such as breaking loads into smaller components, using wheeled equipment and planning movements before lifting.

8. Protecting Clients, Visitors and the Public

We recognise our duty to protect anyone who may be affected by our work. During cleaning operations, we aim to minimise disruption and maintain safe access and exit routes. Wet floor areas are highlighted to reduce slip risks and where possible restricted from use until surfaces are dry.

We take care when running hoses or cables through hallways, staircases and communal areas, using safe routing and, where appropriate, visible warnings. We also respect client property at all times, avoiding damage to furnishings, fixtures and floor coverings by following appropriate cleaning methods and testing products on small inconspicuous areas where needed.

9. Training, Competence and Supervision

All operatives receive induction training in health and safety, including emergency procedures, safe use of chemicals and equipment, manual handling and client care. Additional task-specific training is provided as required, and refresher training is arranged when processes, equipment or legislation change.

Work is supervised proportionately to the experience and competence of the operative. New staff and trainees are monitored closely until they have demonstrated consistent safe working practices.

10. Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

Any accident, incident, near miss or case of ill health connected to our work must be reported to management as soon as practicable, whether it occurs on client premises, in transit or in storage areas. We will record such events, investigate the root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence where possible.

Our operatives are instructed in basic emergency response procedures, including how to react in the event of fire, electrical faults, chemical spills or personal injury, and how to summon appropriate assistance when required. First aid provisions are made according to the nature of the work being undertaken.

11. Review of this Policy

This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment, products or legal requirements. We welcome feedback from clients, team members and partners that may help us improve our approach to health, safety and welfare.

By implementing this policy, West Hampstead Carpet Cleaners aims to deliver a consistently safe, professional and considerate cleaning service for homes and workplaces throughout our service area.
